A RETURN TO TRADITION
The man with this vision is Bill
Maddox, principal of The Maddox
Group, an architect-led design/build
firm in Sarasota. His goal was to
complete an infill project that would
work together with adjacent neighborhoods
and existing infrastructure.
As a partner in the development of the
land, the Maddox Group provided all
site planning, design and construction
services for the homeowners and
common areas.
The development uses early 20th
century architectural design styles to
blend seamlessly into the surrounding
neighborhood of homes. “When you
look at the area where Lincoln Park
is located, the context for it is older,
established homes in a traditional neighborhood
format,” say Bill. “In many older
neighborhoods you’ll see individual
houses being torn down and new ones
built. Because the requirements and
codes are different from what the old
ones were, you wind up with mega
|
houses that are out of scale with the
neighborhood. What we attempted to do
was to bring a community together
under the new standards, while keeping
a traditional flavor.”
While the Mediterranean revival
architecture that has been popular over
the last few years certainly has its place,
Bill thought classical American
architecture was more appropriate for
this neighborhood and designed homes
that were of that vernacular. The
houses in Lincoln Park are unique not
only in style but also in how they work
together. “That was the advantage of
having control of the architectural
design of all eight homes,” says Bill.
“We had to make sure that the houses
fit with each other and carefully
consider how they would sit on the
site.” All the homes are turned toward
the street, which forms a loop around
a centrally located park. And, while
each home is different, they share a
common theme that runs throughout.
